| Vaitape |
A scheduled complimentary hotel motor launch leaves regularly for Vaitape, Bora Bora's main village. At Vaitape wharf, the centre of island activity, stands a monument to Alain Gerbault, the pioneering French yachtsman who made the first non-stop solo crossing of the Atlantic in 1923. Between 1923 and 1929 he circumnavigated the world in his yacht Firecrest, visiting Bora Bora in 1926.

From 1934 to 1940 he lived on Bora Bora but he died on the island of Timor, just north of Australia, in 1941.
His remains were returned to Bora Bora in 1947 and the monument was erected in 1951.
